China overtakes US as main car market
Published: Tuesday 10 February 2009 11:40 UTC

China has overtaken the United States for the first time as the world's largest market for automobiles. In January 735,000 new cars were sold in China, nearly 200,000 more than in the United States.Analysts say these figures do not represent a permanent reversal of the traditional roles. They point out that the Chinese New Year is celebrated in January, which traditionally boosts car sales in China. In The US car sales decrease after the Christmas holidays, and consumer spending there is under pressure from the economic crisis. For the whole year, the US is expected to remain the world's largest automobile market. Last year, more than 13 million cars were sold in the US, compared to just under 10 million in China.
